Complete Proteins: Hemp Hearts

Have you heard of a “complete protein”?

It’s a food source that has all 9 amino acids that we need to thrive, yet can’t manufacture in our bodies. Without getting too scientific, all food has some protein and, when it’s digested, it’s broken down into smaller segments called amino acids.

We need 20 amino acids to grow and function properly. Our bodies have the ability to construct some of these amino acids from various molecules, but not these nine:

histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine

Animal proteins have all 9 essentials, but that’s not helpful if you’re not into meat, for one reason or another. This is the reason for concepts like “protein combining,” where the intention is to get all 9 amino acids by combining foods that have some, but not others. (Rice and beans are a common example).

Did you notice that quinoa was everywhere in the health and nutrition scene in the early ‘00s? It’s a complete protein that’s quick and easy to make, and it can be stored in your pantry. Quinoa is great and all, but our favourite plant-based protein at Solfeggio is hemp hearts!

Hemp hearts are amazing! They pack 12 to 15 grams of complete protein per 3 tablespoons! That makes it a cinch to increase the protein of your salads, cereals, smoothies… the list goes on and on! They’re also high in omega 3 fatty acids, high in fibre (both soluble and insoluble) and nutrients like vitamin E, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron and zinc.

Even though our Bliss Bombs have a strong protein profile already, we roll them in hemp hearts as the final touch! We also add them to our Spirulina Goji Bars for an extra bump to the protein and some textural appeal!
